The Random Things That Only Make Sense When You’re a Mom of Four

There are some things that happen in a house with four kids that you simply cannot explain to people who don’t have four kids.

Actually… sometimes you can’t explain them to people who have four kids either. 😂

At some point, you just stop asking questions..Like when you find a random sock in the fridge.

You stare at it for a second & You think, How did you even get here? And then you close the fridge and move on because honestly, you have bigger things to worry about.

You buy snacks. They disappear… You went grocery shopping yesterday. You bought enough snacks to feed a small army. Somehow, by Wednesday afternoon, there are three crackers, half a granola bar and a questionable-looking apple left in the cupboard.

And you’re pretty sure you didn’t eat any of it.

You have approximately 47 water bottles..But somehow, nobody has a water bottle.

There are water bottles under beds.

In the SUV.

Beside the couch.

In backpacks.

In the bathroom.

And probably one that’s been sitting in the backyard since June.. not joking.

But the second you say, “Grab your water bottle!”

Suddenly nobody can find one.

You can identify your children’s mischief by the silence.

A normal house with four kids is loud. Very loud.

So when the house suddenly becomes completely silent, you don’t think: Ahhh… peace.

You think: Oh no.

Because silence usually means someone is colouring on something they shouldn’t be colouring on, someone is eating something they shouldn’t be eating, or someone has discovered something they definitely shouldn’t have discovered.

You call every child’s name before getting to the right one.

“RAELYN—NOLAN—HOLLYN—HENS—”

“…you.”

And somehow they know exactly who you’re talking to.

You don’t even remember what you were going to say anymore.

You clean a room.

It looks amazing.

Everything is put away.

The floor is visible.

You feel proud.

You leave.

Eleven minutes later, you walk back in and wonder if you’ve accidentally entered a completely different house.

How?

HOW?

Dinner conversations are… interesting.

There are no guarantees about what will come up around the dinner table.

Someone might tell you about their day.

Someone might complain about the food.

Someone might ask a completely inappropriate question.

And inevitably, someone will start talking about poop.

Because apparently that’s just how family dinners work.

You become fluent in chaos.

You can fold laundry while answering a homework question, reminding someone to brush their teeth, listening to another child tell you a story, and yelling from across the house that NO, WE ARE NOT DOING THAT.

All at the same time.

And somehow, you understand exactly what’s happening.

It’s a skill.

I’m convinced moms of four should have their own Olympic event.

And sometimes… you just laugh.

Because what else can you do?

The laundry pile isn’t going anywhere.

The dishes will still be there tomorrow.

Someone will lose another shoe.

Someone will spill something.

Someone will need a snack approximately 4.7 seconds after dinner.

Someone will argue.

Someone will cry.

Someone will make you laugh so hard you forget how tired you are.

And that’s the strange, beautiful thing about raising four kids.

It’s messy.

It’s loud.

It’s exhausting.

It’s chaotic.

It’s completely unpredictable.

But it’s also your normal.

And one day, I’m sure I’ll look back at these years and realize that the things that drove me absolutely crazy were some of the things I miss the most.

The random socks.

The endless snacks.

The water bottles everywhere.

The noise.

The laughter.

The “MOM!” coming from four different directions.

The little people who somehow manage to need you all at the exact same time.

So, yes…

My house is rarely quiet.

Something is almost always sticky.

Someone is usually hungry.

And I have absolutely no idea where half of our socks have gone.

But I’m a mom of four.

And apparently, this is just what normal looks like. ❤️
