Sundayreset

A Realistic Sunday Reset for Busy Moms

Sunday is supposed to be the day we rest, recharge, and prepare for the week ahead.

But if you’re a mom, especially a mom with a busy family, Sunday can sometimes feel like the final boss of the week. 😂

There are clothes everywhere, sports bags that smell questionable, a fridge that needs attention, and approximately 47 things you suddenly remember need to happen before Monday morning.

And honestly? I’ve stopped trying to make my Sunday reset look like the ones you see on Pinterest.

There are no perfectly organized baskets, spotless baseboards, or beautifully labelled meal-prep containers around here.

Our Sunday reset is much more realistic.

It’s about getting our family somewhat organized so that Monday doesn’t completely knock us over.

1. I Start With the Calendar

Before I do anything else, I look at the week ahead.

Appointments. Practices. Games. Activities. Birthdays. Work. Whatever else we’ve somehow managed to squeeze into seven days.

With four kids, if I don’t look ahead, something will absolutely sneak up on me.

I like to figure out:

  • Who needs to be where and when
  • Which evenings are going to be especially busy
  • What meals we can realistically make
  • What needs to be packed or prepared ahead of time
  • Which days I know I’m going to have absolutely no energy to cook

This little bit of planning can save me from a lot of “WHAT ARE WE DOING FOR DINNER?!” panic later in the week.

2. The Laundry Mountain

I wish I could tell you that Sunday is when I completely catch up on laundry.

It isn’t.

I don’t think I’ve ever truly been “caught up” on laundry.

Instead, I try to get the most important things done.

Towels.

Underwear.

Sports clothes.

The things we actually need for Monday.

Sometimes that means there is still a basket sitting in the hallway on Monday morning.

And you know what?

That’s okay.

The goal isn’t to have an empty laundry room.

The goal is to have clean underwear. 😂

3. Reset the Kitchen

I don’t deep clean my entire house every Sunday.

I focus on the kitchen because a clean-ish kitchen makes the whole house feel a little more manageable.

I’ll clear the counters, load the dishwasher, wipe everything down and clean out anything in the fridge that has definitely seen better days.

Then I try to make sure we have some easy food available for the week.

Not elaborate meal prep.

Just food.

Because sometimes “dinner” on a Tuesday night is going to be whatever I can throw together while someone is looking for their missing baseball glove.

4. Get the Kids’ Stuff Together

This is where having a busy family can get a little ridiculous.

Shoes.

Jackets.

Sports equipment.

Water bottles.

Lunch containers.

I try to gather as much as possible before Monday.

It doesn’t always work.

But even getting 80% prepared is better than starting Monday morning at zero.

5. Do a Quick House Reset

Notice I said quick.

I’m not trying to make my house look like nobody lives here.

Because six people live here.

And four of those people are kids.

There will be crumbs.

There will be toys.

There will be shoes in places shoes absolutely should not be.

So instead of trying to deep clean everything, I focus on the areas that make the biggest difference.

Living room.

Kitchen.

Entryway.

Bathrooms.

Then I stop.

Because there is always going to be something else that needs cleaning.

6. Prepare One or Two Things Ahead

This is probably the part of a Sunday reset that helps me the most.

I don’t meal prep for six hours.

I might make something easy for Monday.

Wash some fruit.

Prepare snacks.

Cook some meat that can be used for another meal.

Or simply make sure we have ingredients for a few quick dinners.

The less I have to think about food on a busy weeknight, the better.

7. Get Myself Ready, Too

This is the part us moms tend to forget.

We’re so busy making sure everyone else has what they need that we forget that we’re part of the family too.

So I try to take a little time for myself.

A shower.

Clean pajamas.

Skincare.

A cup of tea.

Watching something I enjoy.

Sitting somewhere quiet for five minutes.

Nothing fancy.

Just something that makes me feel like a person instead of the family coordinator.

8. Don’t Try to Fix Your Entire Life on Sunday

This might be the most important part.

You don’t need to completely reinvent your routine every Sunday.

You don’t need to clean every closet.

You don’t need to meal prep 25 perfectly portioned meals.

You don’t need to wake up at 5 AM Monday morning with a colour-coded planner and a green smoothie.

Sometimes you just need to get everyone through the week.

And that’s enough.

My Sunday Reset Philosophy

I’ve learned that a reset doesn’t have to mean starting over. Sometimes it simply means making Monday a little easier.

A few loads of laundry.

A quick kitchen clean.

Looking at the calendar.

Planning a couple of dinners.

Finding everyone’s shoes.

And then giving yourself permission to stop.

Because motherhood isn’t about having everything perfectly organized.

It’s about keeping everyone moving forward—even when the house is messy, the schedule is insane, someone can’t find their other shoe, and you’re drinking yesterday’s tea.

And honestly?

That’s what our Sunday reset looks like.

Not perfect. Not Pinterest-worthy. Just real life.

And for this mom of four, that’s more than enough. 😃
